TIPS FOR TRAVELERS

Security: Panama is one of the safest countries in the region, however, as you would do in any other major city, be cautious and avoid lonely places or bad neighborhoods specially at night.

Visa: Citizens of most countries including the USA and Western Europe, do not need a visa. Tourists from the USA, Canada and EU need only purchase a US$5 tourist card from the airline at the ticket counter on the day of their departure for Panama.

Taxi: Not metered, and although fares vary considerably, they are generally very low. Fares should be agreed upon in advance. Drivers do not expect tips. In Panama City, fare range from US$1.25 to US$3, unless you are travelling to the Panama Canal or the Causeway.

Car rental: Car rental agencies are available in city centers and at the airport; the minimun age required to rent a car is 23. 4WD should be booked in advance.

Documentation: A national driving license is sufficient for 30-90 day visit (depends on your tourist visa) along with your passport.

ATMs: Panama has become the largest banking center in Latin America; therefore, ATMs can be found throughout the country.

Credit Cards: Credit Cards are accepted in most establishments, but carry some cash for taxis, small vendors, etc.

Water: Panama is one of the few countries in Latin America where you can safely drink tap water. Sanitary conditions are excellent. There are no special health concerns and no shots or special medications are necessary unless you plan to hike in the Darien jungle or other remote areas.

Electricity: Voltage (110V) and plugs are the same as in the United States and Canada.

Vaccines: No vaccines or shots are required.

Phone Calls: Buy an International calling card (available at most supermarkets and pharmacies) or dial 106 to call collect with the assistance of an operator from any paid phone or land line. You may also rent a mobile phone from hotels or car rentals while you are in the country.
