Day 1 San Blas Islands & the Kuna People
Early in the morning you will be picked up at the lobby of your hotel and taken to Albrook Airport. You will depart on a small plane to San Blas and arrive at Achutupu where you will be met by a representative of Panama Explorers. The lodge is located on Uaguitupu Island, about 15 minutes from the airstrip via dugout canoe. Owned and operated by a Kuna family, the accommodations are basic but comfortable in traditional Kuna-style huts with cozy beds, private bathrooms, and hammocks on the front porch. Family-style meals are served in the dining room overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Hot water and electricity produced by small generator is only available for a couple of hours each day. After settling in and having breakfast, your first excursion will be to the neighboring village on the island of Achutupu where you will have an excellent opportunity to learn about the Kuna way of life and their traditional ceremonies. While at the village, you will be able to visit the communal house of the “Sahilas” (Kuna chiefs) where decisions in favor of the community are made, advice on all aspects of life is offered, and local laws are enforced. Learn about how a typical Kuna house is constructed, the economy, the traditional “mola” (traditional Kuna clothing), and how sugarcane is processed to prepare a local drink. Later, you will return to the lodge to relax on one of the hammocks before having lunch. Later in the afternoon you will go snorkeling in the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean Sea to admire stunning marine life.
Lunch and dinner included.
Day 2 Explorations in San Blas
In the morning you will visit the mainland by dugout canoe and travel up the mouth of the Achutupu River to the point where outboards are allowed. You will then hike through scrub-like habitat and fruit trees (mango, cocoa, plantain, and breadfruit) that are excellent for birding. In the afternoon, you will have the option to go snorkeling, relax at the beach, or lay on one of the hammocks at the lodge. There will be other tours to choose from.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.
Day 3 Return to Panama City
This morning you have breakfast and then will take the short ride aboard a dugout canoe to the airstrip where you board our plane back to Panama City. You will be met and transferred to your hotel upon arrival.
