Forty-five minutes from Panama City, or two minutes from the town of Gamboa, Pipeline Road at Soberanía National Park is considered to be one of the most accessible areas for birdwatching and wildlife observation in Central America. Pipeline Road is world famous among birdwatchers due to its high number of bird species. It is one of the best places in the Americas to watch tropical birds, with more than 400 species.

TOUR INFORMATION

Early in the morning you will be picked up at the lobby of your hotel by a Panama Explorers birding guide and taken to Soberanía National Park in the Panama Canal watershed. You will start birdwatching at the Ammo Dump Lakes looking for the rufescent tiger-heron, capped heron, and wattled jacana, among others, and will work your way towards the world-renowned Pipeline Road. Pipeline Road held the record of Audubon Society’s World Christmas Bird Count for 19 years straight, with 357 species of birds identified in a 24 hour-period.

During World War II, a pipeline was built along the Panama Canal to transport fuel between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans in the event the waterway was attacked. Fortunately, it was never used. Today, the road built to maintain the pipeline provides excellent access to primary rainforests within Soberanía National Park. Only 45 minutes from Panama City, Soberanía's 55,000 acres boast some 525 species of birds including the black hawk-eagle, black-cheeked woodpecker, black-breasted puffbird, broad-billed motmot, blue cotinga, purple-throated fruitcrow, masked tityra, trogon (violaceous, slaty-tailed, black-tailed, and black-throated), fasciated antshrike, streak-chested antpitta, antbird (bicolored, ocellated, and spotted), to name a few, as well as a great array of migrants (during the North American winter months).

By late morning you will take a short drive nearby Summit Botanical Gardens where a picnic lunch will be served. Here you will visit exhibit on the harpy eagle. In the early afternoon, you will go birdwatching to Summit Ponds where you will look for the spectacled owl before returning to your hotel in Panama City.
